HS Community Outreach Program: Updates

CFA-NEHEMIAH AND GASA SA GUGMA. Faithful to the spirit of Jesuit education “to form men and women for others”, Grades 7 and 8 students had their separate outreach activities on January 10, 2015. Grade 7 St. Peter Claver under Mrs. Eunilyn Seroylas-Chua (class adviser) went to Christ for Asia-Nehemiah, an orphanage in Quijada, Guadalupe, Cebu City. Simultaneously, Grade 8 – Kostka under Ms. Jacqueline Dinela went to Gasa sa Gugma in Cabantan, Mabolo, Cebu City where they had a half-day immersion with the aged. The said sections are second to the last in this year’s series of Social Involvement activities in the High School Department.

GAWAD KALINGA-MAGUIKAY. Before 2014 ended, Grade 9 St. Roche Gonzalez and St. Francis Xavier successfully culminated the year level’s immersion in Gawad Kalinga–Maguikay, a housing site for relocated informal settlers. Accompanied by their advisers, Ms. Hezeline Cambarijan and Br. Nikki James Lee, SJ respectively, the Juniors painted the houses donated by SHS-B Batch 87. Other than painting the houses, they also prepared games and presentations for the children in GK.

SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM. In December 2014, the Grade 10 students culminated their Service Learning Program (SLP) with a simple yet meaningful Christmas party with 455 Grade 6 pupils of Canduman Elementary School. The seniors together with their supportive class advisers welcomed the pupils from Canduman and shared the gift of joy of Christmas. Games and heartwarming presentations of songs and dances brought smiles and cheers to the grade 6 pupils.

MOVING FORWARD. The school’s social involvement activities (Outreach as they are commonly called) are part of its thrust to provide integral formation rooted in the Ignatian ideals which among others teach us “to give and not to count the cost.” The completion of the High School Department’s engagements and partnerships this school year are not really closures but signals that more are yet to come as we continue “witnessing with the Sacred Heart through Service” in 2015.
